Student Zine Exhibition

An exhibition of student-produced zines responding to the 2026 Biennale of Sydney is now on view at the Schaeffer Fine Art Library.

The Schaeffer Fine Arts Library is pleased to present an exhibition of student-produced zines. Developed in response to the 2024 Biennale of Sydney, Rememory, the exhibition showcases how students translated their research into creative, independently published works.

Across the semester, students visited the Biennale at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and White Bay Power Station, critically engaging with its exhibitions, themes and histories. Drawing inspiration from Rememory—a concept borrowed from Toni Morrison that reflects on the persistence of memory—their zines explore questions of representation, place, institutional histories and belonging through a wide range of creative approaches.

The exhibition highlights the zine as both a research method and a publishing format. Combining critical writing with visual experimentation, the works include artist books, fold-out publications, illustrated maps, field notes and mixed-media formats that reflect the diversity of students' responses to the Biennale.

The project was developed in collaboration with Anne Goodfellow, Cultural Collections Librarian, and Rare Books and Special Collections. Before creating their own zines, students explored the University Library's zine collection and participated in a zine-making workshop, demonstrating how library collections can support creative practice, research and teaching.

Alongside the physical exhibition, a selection of digital zines is available through the exhibition website.

The zines in this exhibition were produced by students enrolled in the art history unit ARHT6936: Biennales, Triennales and Contemporary Art, coordinated by Dr. Yvonne Low. The exhibition was developed with the support of Anne Goodfellow, Cultural Collections Librarian, Rare Books and Special Collections, the Schaeffer Library team, and Dr Katrina Grant.
