An exhibition of twelve stunning paintings by First Nations artists.

We invite you upstairs at the Schaeffer Library for a rich aesthetic experience born of sovereign First Nations Culture, Country, and Law.

Twelve stunning paintings, drawings and prints from a small private collection have been chosen to exemplify Indigenous art from Country far removed from the urban fringes of Australia. Six community art centres are represented:

  • Maningrida and Yirrkala (Arnhem Land)
  • Peppimenarti (west of Darwin)
  • Warburton and Kintore (Western Desert)
  • Yuendumu (Tanami Desert)

The earliest work, painted on a bark panel around 1965 by Yirritja ritual leader Birrikidji Gumana, represents a carved ceremonial ground and key actors at Gängan, an outstation on the Gulf of Carpentaria.

The latest, a small canvas by Mrs Eunice Porter, shows her opening an exhibition of new art from Ngaanyatjarra Lands, at Perth’s Lawrence Wilson Gallery in 2012.

The exhibition is held in conjunction with the undergraduate course ARHT2636 Contemporary Indigenous Art.

This exhibition is on view at the Schaeffer Fine Arts Library from April to June 2024.
