A masterclass with experimental film pioneers Robert Beavers and Ute Aurand about their ideas and processes.

Still from Ute Aurand, Sakura, Sakura (2015)

In this masterclass, experimental filmmakers Ute Aurand and Robert Beavers present a masterclass exploring their philosophy and artistic practice. Students will have the opportunity to engage in discussions with the filmmakers about their approaches, influences, sources, and methods of creation. Aurand and Beavers will demonstrate their use of the Bolex camera and offer insights on its unique qualities and how these inform their work. Students will then have the opportunity to create and discuss their own short works under Aurand’s and Beavers’ guidance.

Co-presented by the Power Institute and Film Studies at the University of Sydney. Robert Beavers and Ute Aurand's visit has been made possible by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, German Films and the Goethe Institute Australia.

The program, The Films of Ute Aurand, Robert Beavers and Gregory J. Markopoulos, will be presented at AGNSW on 28-29 October and at the Australian Cinémathèque at GoMA on 3-5 November. Ute Aurand's films will screen at ACMI's ART+FILM on Tuesday 8 November; Gregory J. Markopoulos' and Robert Beavers' films will screen at the Melbourne Cinematheque on Wednesday 9 November.
